ASUS EEE PC 1000
Review of the ASUS EEE PC 1000 netbook
The EEE PC 1000 is Asus' replacement for the EEE PC 901 - time flies in the world of netbooks!
Right, some people argue that netbooks are boring, that they all look the same and pratically have the same specifcation! We say that's a ridiculous arguement. Fair enough, there's not a great deal different but there is enough choice to make things interesting.
There are two main versions of the 1000 - one sporting the Intel Atom 1.6ghz processor, 1gb ram a 40gb SSD and linux, and the 1000H - featuring a 80gb hard drive and Windows XP. We'd go for the slightly more expensive linux version; its faster on boot up and faster loading up programs, and thats what you need with an internet surfing netbook.
Both have Bluetooth and Wireless-N, a large multi-touch mousepad and software to overclock the CPU - not that you need to do that as its fast enough already. The feature list is best in class for mini laptops.
One of the best things about the EEE PC 1000 is the battery life - we got about 7 hours on the linux version, which is one of the best seem for a netbook.
The 10" screen is a big plus. Although it has the same resolution as the 8.9" screen, it just feels easier on the eye. The larger screen means a larger keyboard, which is a real benefit if you actually use a netbook for work, you loser!
Overall, we think this netbook is rather good. Some may say its not really a netbook in thats its almost a laptop. But we disagree. 10" is still tiny compared to the 15-17" screens seen on most laptops. Its might be slightly more expensive, but we think its worth it.
